Bone health index in the assessment of bone health: The Generation R Study

Vid Prijatelj

Bone acquisition trajectory in the paediatric population is an important determinant of peak bone mass at young adulthood. Low peak bone mass is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures later in life. Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is used to measure overall bone health, yet it is not used often due to certain limitations. That is why Vid Prijatelj explored whether bone health index (BHI), a measure acquired from hand radiographs, can be used to asses the risk of paediatric fracture, how well does it relate to overall paediatric bone health, and the genetic background of the measure itself.
